Who Knew? :)
I just love that feeling you get when you help someone or you know that you will be able to help them. That's what I love about peer support. We get to help people in so many ways. I just can't stop smiling; just knowing that you may be the thing that turns someone's day from horrible great. I love the tutoring, the looks on the kids' faces when you say "Good Job!" or "You did it!" or "That was amazing!" I love that just by praising or encouraging someone you can put a smile on their faces. Another thing we do is called secret pals. We ask teachers for the names of seventh grade students that they think are struggling, and we write letters to them. Well today I got my first letter back, and it is the cutest thing ever. It means the world to me that I can help someone who maybe is having a hard time transitioning from sixth grade to seventh and give them a friendly face to help them adjust. I think this is why I love helping people so much, because after you help them, it's like it help yourself too. It makes you feel better about what you've done, and about yourself. We also go around and sing to the teachers on their birthdays, which I think is great. Teachers don't get enough recognition for all the work they do. Now, I know I probably sound really cheesey and stupid right now, but it's true. They have to plan what we do every day, grade all the assignments that they plan, help the students that were absent, and so much more that we don't even know about! I'm glad that they are there to help us, and that we are there to help our peers. Now here is one thing that we do that is soooo FUNNY! We go out into the halls in-between homeroom and give out free compliments, the kids responses are hilarious! One time my friend and I were in the hall with our posters and We told this kid we liked his shirt. His response? "No you don't." Then he walked away! If I ever compliment him again, you know what I am going to say? either "I like your personality." Or "I like your attitude!" I'm so glad that I took this class, I'm sure that it will change my life forever, and possibly influence what I end up doing in my life.
